Ms. Mary White

Director of Human Resources
ABC Graphics
1234 Main Street
Jacksonville, FL 32256

Dear Ms. White:

I am very interested in pursuing the position of Graphic Design Assistant with ABC Graphics. I feel I have valuable creative and technical skills that would be an asset to this department. I have been employed at ABC Graphics in the Production Department since January 2008. I would very much like to continue my employment utilizing my graphic design skills and experience.

Presently, I am enrolled at The Art Institute of Jacksonville and I expect to graduate in 2010. I have extensive training and professional experience in computer graphics, electronic imaging, and production. I am fully proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Quark Xpress, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. In my current position with ABC Graphics I have worked with the Production Manager to improve the process of filing projects and have assisted in the creation of a new filing system for design projects. I feel this experience would be highly beneficial in the Creative Design Department.

I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to further discuss my background and qualifications. Thank you for taking the time to review my résumé and consider my qualifications. I will be in touch to follow-up with you by the end next week.

Sincerely,

10 Common Mistakes

Use this guide and remember to avoid the 10 most common mistakes on cover letters:

Mistake #1: Don’t Overuse “I”

Mistake #2: Don’t Use a Weak Opening: Please consider me for your entry level web designer position. Better: Your need for a top performing entry level web designer is an excellent match to my internship and freelance experience.

Mistake #3: Don’t Omit Your Top Selling Points – For example, Awarded Best Interior Design Portfolio, etc.

Mistake #4: Don’t Make It Too Long – keep your cover letter to one page

Mistake #5: Don’t Repeat Your Résumé Word for Word

Mistake #6: Don’t Be Vague

Mistake #7: Don’t Forget to Customize – change your letter for each job you’re applying for.

Mistake #8: Don’t End on a Passive Note – state that you promise to follow up with the employer at a certain time

Mistake #9: Don’t Be Rude – Your cover letter should thank the reader for his time and consideration

Mistake #10: Don’t Forget to Sign the Letter – unless over email, a signature is always proper business etiquette
